American tells Kurdish militants: Want to retire in the US?

A senior U.S. diplomat said that as part of a move from armed struggle to political life, former leaders of the Kurdistan Workers' Party and its Syrian branch, the People's Protection Units, may relocate to the United States.

The Kurdistan Workers' Party is designated as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union. After 47 years of rebellion against Turkey, it recently announced its dissolution.

Embassy of Tom Barak:

"The issue that will soon arise is the differences between the governments of Syria and Turkey.

The U.S. government said it will do everything possible to review all issues and make fair and reasonable decisions.

If they want to come to the United States and live with us, they can."

Erdogan celebrated symbolically by burning weapons and said it is now time for all parties, including those pro-Kurds, to "move forward together".

But U.S. officials admitted that the full reintegration of Syria may take time, and said that trust between the parties remains quite fragile.
