Reference News website reported on April 10 that according to a report on the website of the US "Wall Street Journal" on April 8, Washington and Beijing may be heading for decoupling. However, American businesses' ties with China will prove difficult to break.

A new report commissioned by the American Chamber of Commerce Foundation shows that among approximately 200 U.S. companies surveyed in recent years, many plan to maintain or strengthen their ties with China, although some companies are seeking diversification outside of China as tensions between the two major powers intensify.

The research and surveys underlying the report were conducted before the latest trade war between the Trump administration and Beijing erupted. One of the authors of the report, Professor Megan Ren of Harvard Business School, said, "American companies are not massively exiting China." Professor Ren interviewed about 60 company executives face-to-face. She said, "However, businesses are seriously considering the risks brought by China and expressed a strong desire to guard against these risks."

In about 40 member enterprises of the American Chamber of Commerce surveyed, around 70% stated that they plan to maintain or strengthen their ties with China. Additionally, around 60% of the 126 members of the Association of Corporate Counsel also expressed the same intention.

Despite the increasing risks, the report still shows that China's market size, its well-established system connecting suppliers and manufacturers, and its skilled workforce all encourage most surveyed companies to hope to maintain their ties with China. (Compiled by Cao Weiguo)
