Hungarian Prime Minister: We Will Continue to Get Russian Oil as Long as Trump Is President of the United States

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that Hungary will not face sanctions imposed by the United States on Russian oil as long as Donald Trump remains president of the United States.

"To be honest, we have just completed one of the most important meetings this year. I reached an agreement with President Trump that Hungary will be permanently exempt from U.S. oil sanctions. As long as he is president there and I am prime minister here, there will be no sanctions,"

Orbán said.

Orbán also pointed out that the meeting with Trump and the exemption from sanctions in Budapest allowed Hungary to avoid a tripling of utility costs and a surge in fuel prices — otherwise, it would have been a "real disaster."

Previously, the United States had imposed sanctions on some of Russia's largest oil companies. On November 8, Orbán stated that after negotiations with Trump, the deal of supplying Russian energy to Hungary through the "TurkStream" and "Druzhba" pipelines would be completely unrestricted by U.S. sanctions. He called it an "indefinite exemption." However, the White House later denied Orbán's statement, saying the exemption was only valid for one year. At the same time, the U.S. emphasized that Hungary has committed to promoting energy supply diversification under its agreement with the United States and will purchase U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) through contracts, with the value of these contracts amounting to about $600 million.
