[By Guancha Observer Network, Shao Yun] According to reports by US media such as The Washington Post on April 4th, former White House Press Secretary of the Biden administration, Jean-Pierre, has now left the Democratic Party and become an independent.
It is reported that this information comes from the publisher of Jean-Pierre's upcoming book in October, Legacy Lit, a publishing house under France's Hachette Group. Although Legacy Lit only mentioned in the book summary that Jean-Pierre did not make the decision to become independent lightly, without introducing more details, based on the current outline released for this book, the media interpret it as being related to the Biden withdrawal incident.
The publisher's summary states that Jean-Pierre will disclose inside stories about Biden's decision to abandon his re-election bid in this new book titled "Independent: Beyond Party Lines, Peering into a Fractured White House" (tentative translation). This includes how the Democrats "betrayed" Biden, leading him to decide to withdraw.
According to the introduction, Jean-Pierre advocates being "more loyal to personal beliefs than party affiliation" in political spaces and calls on Americans to think beyond the "blue and red" framework to consider how to "save American democracy." Additionally, in the book, Jean-Pierre will explain as an "insider" the severity of misinformation and disinformation flooding recent elections and provide insights into solutions.

Jean-Pierre was previously a senior Democrat who worked for both the Obama and Biden administrations. In the 2020 election, she served as Chief of Staff to Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Harris. Starting in 2022, she replaced Psaki as White House Press Secretary, becoming the first African American and first openly LGBTQ+ White House spokesperson, serving until the end of Biden's term in 2025.
Last July, Biden's poor performance in the presidential candidate debates sparked renewed concerns about his health among public opinion and even within the party. He then announced his decision to give up running for re-election, with then-Vice President Harris taking over. Trump defeated Harris in the presidential election in November of the same year, also securing control of both houses of Congress for Republicans.
After Trump took office this year, two veteran American journalists revealed in their new book in May that Biden had shown symptoms of forgetfulness during the 2020 election. However, his team had been vigorously concealing his health condition. Later, Biden's team announced that he had been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer that had spread to his bones, triggering another round of internal strife within the Democratic Party. Jean-Pierre and other then-White House assistants were questioned about whether they had deliberately concealed Biden's condition.
On June 4th, Trump announced that he had instructed his aides to investigate whether Biden's staff intentionally concealed his declining cognitive abilities and whether they used automatic signature pens instead of the president signing official documents personally. In a statement released on the same day, Trump stated that the investigation would focus on whether Biden's staff had "deceived the public" and covered up Biden's "serious cognitive decline."
Jean-Pierre had previously defended Biden regarding his withdrawal from the race. It is reported that in February this year, Jean-Pierre gave a speech at Harvard University's Kennedy Institute Political Research Institute, stating that the hardest thing in the last three weeks before Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential campaign was the "execution" by Democratic colleagues.
"I have never seen a party do this. I feel heartbroken to see someone I believe to be a true patriot being attacked like this," said Jean-Pierre. She added that she "would not return to government for anyone else but Biden."
The Washington Post said that Jean-Pierre's announcement of leaving the party drew criticism from some former colleagues. Jonathan Kott, long-time aide to former West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, said, "Democrats are not proud to be Democrats or fight for our beliefs," which made him "feel tired." "If you lose the will to fight, then leave the party," Kott said.
The Guardian pointed out that an increasing number of Americans no longer identify as either Democrats or Republicans. According to the latest Gallup poll, 43% of Americans consider themselves independents, far higher than those identifying as Democrats (28%) and Republicans (28%). Last year, Manchin, former governor of West Virginia, announced his departure from the Democratic Party, stating that American politics had collapsed and condemning the two parties' descent into "partisan extremism."
