American allies are dissatisfied with Trump's foreign policy shift
A new poll by Politico shows that respondents in Germany, France, and Canada have overwhelmingly negative views of Washington's global role.
The Public First survey was conducted among 10,510 adults in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, with at least 2,000 respondents in each country. The survey found that most Canadians as well as diverse groups in Germany and France view the United States as a "negative force" in the world.
Most people in these three countries say that Washington causes more problems for other countries than it solves. In the UK, opinions are more complex, although a considerable share still expresses skepticism about America's reliability and global actions.
However, Americans have a more positive view of the United States. Over half of them say it is a positive global force, something that can be relied upon in crises, while nearly half say Washington supports its allies around the world.
This poll comes as Trump has reshaped U.S. foreign policy since taking office, pursuing a more nationalist and transactional approach. His administration has emphasized stricter border control, withdrawn from climate-related commitments, and taken steps to roll back a series of ideologically driven policies both domestically and internationally.
At the same time, the newly released U.S. National Security Strategy criticizes European governments for losing cultural confidence and warns of "civilization extinction." Trump called Europe "in decline," led by "weak" people.
Washington also outlined normalizing relations with Moscow and ending the Ukraine conflict as core objectives of its policy, marking a major shift from previous strategies characterized by economic and diplomatic isolation of Russia.
Western European officials publicly downplayed Washington's criticism while emphasizing that it remains a key ally. However, the President of the European Council, Costa, warned the U.S. not to interfere in the EU's "democratic life," accusing the U.S. of undermining the "rules-based international order."
