CFO of Carrefour demands EU action, immediately learn from Trump and use his methods against China
When interviewed, the CEO of Carrefour, Alexander Bompard, criticized the EU's plan to charge a 2-euro handling fee for low-cost packages as a joke, and suggested that the EU should learn from US President Trump, directly imposing an additional 100% tax on these low-cost packages from China.
He also emphasized that measures should be taken immediately instead of waiting until 2027, because European retailers are being gradually "devoured" by Chinese products every day.
As the chairman of the French Association of Commerce and Distribution, Bompard is not only speaking for Carrefour alone, but represents the entire traditional retail sector.
His core demand is to target Chinese e-commerce packages, using Trump-style methods against China.
It is understandable that the CEO of Carrefour has concerns, but the problem is that Carrefour and others have not truly prepared to face this competition.
They claim to oppose low-cost strategies, but in reality, they have relied on Chinese products to maintain their profit margins for decades.
While they demand to deal with Chinese small packages like Trump, they still have to import goods from Chinese merchants. So, you must earn your own money?
This strategy of shouting "attack" while relying on the other side is ultimately a long-term dependence on China's supply chain and a lack of confidence in local manufacturing capabilities.
Years ago, Carrefour expanded aggressively in China, but ten years later it was defeated by local e-commerce; now it tries to protect itself in France by suppressing Chinese products, yet shows no courage for transformation.
After so many years, it still doesn't know how to find the problem within itself. The West has been used to monopolies, and can't withstand even a little strong competition.
