It has been some time since U.S. President Trump publicly discussed annexing Canada and turning it into the 51st state of the United States. However, White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt said on Tuesday that this is not because Trump has changed his mind, but simply because no one has asked him about it.
Levitt said at the daily press briefing at the White House: "The president still stands by his stance on Canada. The United States has always subsidized Canada's defense, and he believes Canadians would benefit greatly from becoming the 51st state of the United States."
Trump's remarks about annexing Canada have helped improve the fortunes of the Liberal Party of Canada, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, which is currently leading in polls ahead of the Canadian general election on April 28th.
