The Wall Street Journal commented that Europe and Canada "may establish a new economic and defense alliance," implying that the concept of 'the West' is no longer centered on American military and economic power but is shifting toward being 'Europe-centered,' meaning that 'the West' will no longer include the United States, as Trump has effectively turned America into an outsider.
Canadians will not become America's 51st state, nor will they willingly become the EU's 28th member. Nevertheless, Trump is deeply incensed by the growing closeness between Canada and the EU. He has issued threats to both sides, calling Canada's potential status as a de facto EU member an "act of hostility against the United States." He warned he might impose tariffs on Europe and could even terminate all trade relations with the EU entirely. Should the U.S. launch trade wars simultaneously against both Canada and Europe, this would truly be "adding insult to injury" for Trump, who is already entangled in the quagmire of conflict with Iran. Yet von der Leyen herself may tremble, as she has declared her intent to use every available means to balance trade relations with China, showing a clear willingness to engage in trade warfare. In reality, this represents a "civil war within the West"—a situation in which China stands to benefit the most, able to sit back and watch the rivals fight while remaining unscathed.
