Foreign Media: Ancient Site in Eastern China Pushes Back the History of the Earliest Cities in the Yangtze River Delta.

Chinese archaeologists have uncovered a settlement dating back about 6,000 years at the Doushan site in Wuxi, Jiangsu, which is the earliest known settlement in the area, previously the oldest Liangzhu culture site in the region dated back about 5,300 years.

The Doushan site was discovered during an early survey for a highway construction project in 2023, covering an area of about 25 hectares. Experts believe that the complex network of city walls and moats found at the site was not used for defense, but for water management, indicating that the origin of cities in the Yangtze River basin may be related to "using water to benefit humanity."
