Release of the "Last Batch" of Files Related to Epstein, Up to 3 Million
United States – The U.S. Department of Justice released over 3 million documents related to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein on Friday. Epstein was convicted of sexual crimes, and this release was required by a law passed by Congress in November last year.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said at a press conference that these were the final batch of documents to be released by the White House under the law. The newly released documents include more than 3 million files, 2,000 videos, and 180,000 images. He specifically pointed out that many names and pictures have been redacted, and added that the Department of Justice will provide a summary to members of Congress.
AFP stated that since Trump returned to politics last January, the Epstein case has been a thorn in his side. Part of the reason is that this president once believed in conspiracy theories about Jeffrey Epstein spread by his supporters and promised during the campaign to reveal the truth about the case.
Many of Trump's supporters believe that the Trump administration tried to cover up Jeffrey Epstein's connections with some influential figures, as well as the many mysteries surrounding the financier's death in prison before his trial for trafficking minors in 2019. The prison authorities determined that Epstein died by suicide.
Previously, Trump had long tried to prevent the disclosure of Epstein's court records, but in November last year, he changed his position and announced his support for disclosure.
The president said that he had been friends with the former businessman in the 1990s and early 2000s, and later distanced himself from him without knowing about his criminal behavior.
