Reference News, October 28 report: According to AFP, on October 26, the union of more than 3,000 Boeing defense sector employees in the U.S. Midwest, who have been on strike since August, said they voted to reject the company's latest contract proposal. This is their fourth time rejecting it.
The president of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Brian Bryant, issued a statement saying: "Boeing claims they have listened to the voices of employees, but today's voting result proves they have not."
The statement said that employees in the St. Louis area are waiting for larger salary increases, more signing bonuses, and retirement savings comparable to those of Boeing employees in the Pacific Northwest.
Boeing expressed "disappointment" over the voting result which failed by a narrow margin of 51% to 49%. A Boeing spokesperson told reporters: "The result was very close, and we heard many people increasingly willing to cross the picket lines; clearly, many people understand the value of our proposal."
Dan Gillian, a senior executive at Boeing St. Louis, said the company's proposal would provide an average 45% raise over the five-year term of the contract, plus various bonuses, more vacation time, and additional medical and pension benefits.
