Trump keeps his promise
Announces unprecedented major action
On Wednesday, March 30th (local time), US President Trump officially signed an executive order, directly targeting Brazil, which has been strongly opposing the United States: formally announcing that it will impose a 50% tariff on imported Brazilian products. However, Trump also left a loophole, with approximately 700 categories of products such as oil, orange juice, airplanes, iron ore and fuel products, phone bills, etc., being listed in the exception list.
This may trigger a trade war between the United States and Brazil, the largest economy in Latin America, as Brazil exports a large amount of beef, coffee, steel and other products to the United States.
The announcement made by the United States on Wednesday means that, at least so far, Brazil will face one of the highest tariff rates in the world imposed by the United States. However, this new policy is actually unrelated to trade.
Trump's new tariff rate is not aimed at creating a fair trading environment, but for political purposes: Trump characterized these tariffs as a "retaliation" against his ally, Brazil's former right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro, who has been prosecuted.
