Why have India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire?

Michael Shoebridge, director of the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian think tank, said that both India and Pakistan are ready for a ceasefire as they "both feel they have already won."

He told Al Jazeera, "So I think they are ready for a ceasefire, and I think they do not want a wider war to break out."

"India successfully attacked what it claims to be terrorist hideouts in Pakistan as well as some Pakistani military targets. But Pakistan claimed to have shot down an advanced Indian fighter jet. In this way, the honor of both sides can be satisfied. I think they are ready for mediation."

Shoebridge also predicted that the ceasefire agreement between these two nuclear-armed countries will continue.

He said, "I know there were some violations of the ceasefire earlier on Saturday evening, but I think this is all part of the agreement coming into effect."
