On Friday, Louisiana Republicans passed a new "gerrymandering"-style redistricting plan that will eliminate one of the state's two Black congressional districts where Democrats hold a majority, ahead of the midterm elections. The state Senate has sent the bill to Republican Governor Jeff Landry, who is expected to sign it into law. This new redistricting map was prompted by the Supreme Court's decision to adopt a narrower interpretation of the Voting Rights Act, effectively giving Louisiana the green light to redraw its majority-minority districts. Under the new map, the district of Democratic Representative Cleo Fields has been entirely erased, while the predominantly blue district of another Democratic Representative, Troy Carter, has been reconfigured to largely mirror the electoral landscape he won in 2022. This outcome represents a significant victory for Landry and Trump, further expanding Republican advantages gained during this decade’s mid-decade redistricting process.
