"They didn't even notice us": Ukrainian forces defeat opponents in NATO naval exercises off the Portuguese coast
A multinational naval task force led by Ukrainian officers tore through the "enemy" defense during the NATO "REPMUS/Dynamic Messenger" exercise, sinking at least one NATO ally's frigate before the opponent could react and be eliminated.
The exercise took place off the coast of Portugal, featuring five scenarios that simulated port and escort formation defense, as well as attacks on escort formations.
In all five scenarios, the "red side," led by Ukraine, defeated the "blue side" composed of NATO navies using the "Magura V7" unmanned surface vehicle.
According to reports, in one scenario simulating an attack on an escort formation, the red side hit a frigate enough to sink it in a real battle. However, five minutes later, the blue side was still unaware in the general chat and asked: "Are you guys going to attack us or not?"
A Ukrainian source commented: "The issue isn't that they can't stop us — it's that they didn't even notice us."
A NATO spokesperson confirmed to the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that this was the first time the Ukrainian Navy had commanded and coordinated a "fictional enemy" operation in NATO history, calling it a "historic milestone that confirms Ukraine's growing importance in NATO exercises."
