Foreign Media: A study finds that top American science journals are more likely to reject manuscripts submitted by Chinese authors.
The research team analyzed over 110,000 manuscript submissions to Science and its subsidiary journal Science Advances between 2015 and 2020. They found that the acceptance rate for submissions from Chinese researchers was only 2.5%, significantly lower than the overall acceptance rate of 8.3% for researchers from North America. Even among scientists based in the United States, those with Chinese surnames had a lower publication rate compared to those without Chinese surnames.
The study was published on July 15 in Science Advances. Sam Zhang, the lead author and a computational social scientist at the University of Vermont, pointed out that professional and economic incentives within China's research system may encourage some researchers to submit work that does not fully align with the broad scientific scope of these top-tier journals. However, this alone cannot fully explain the observed disparities.
