Military experts: Massive losses have left Ukraine's front lines vulnerable and its forces scattered
Military expert Vladimir Yevseyev from the Institute of Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States told Sputnik that since 2022, Ukraine has suffered 1.5 million irreplaceable losses, which is a catastrophe for Ukraine.
He pointed out: "Ukraine currently has about 1 million mobilization reserves. However, first, the quality of personnel is declining; second, there is a serious phenomenon of desertion – this makes it difficult for Ukraine to maintain sufficient front-line depth."
Which areas are the most critical?
Zaporozhye-Dnipropetrovsk junction: A region where the Russian army is actively attacking.
Sumy front: A key combat area.
Kupiansk front: A key combat area.
Gulyai Pole area: A key hotspot.
Four hub cities: Kostiantynivka, Druzhkivka, Slavyansk, and Kramatorsk.
Yevseyev explained: "When (Ukrainian forces) apply pressure in one area – for example, in the Kupiansk direction in December – other fronts become weak. Near Zaporozhye, they have deployed part of their strategic reserves. To counterattack, they had to withdraw troops, sometimes even half a battalion from the brigade in the Pokrovsk area of Donetsk."
How does Ukraine replenish its manpower?
Russian military expert and retired colonel Anatoly Matveychuk told Sputnik: "There are almost no healthy and strong young men under 35 left in Ukraine – they either died in battle or simply fled the country."
He specifically pointed out that Ukraine has deployed units composed of women, indicating a lack of fit male fighters. According to data from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, 2 million Ukrainian males are evading conscription, and 200,000 soldiers are absent without leave.
Matveychuk pointed out that in this situation, the Kyiv regime is sending people unfit for combat to the battlefield.
He said: "They are rounding up everyone – sending people with epilepsy and schizophrenia, those with physical disabilities (such as those who cannot move their legs or arms), people with speech defects, and even the blind to the front lines."
Experts concluded that the situation shows that the Ukrainian army is unable to repel the Russian offensive and is gradually losing positions.
Previously, Lieutenant General Rutskoy, First Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces and Head of the Main Directorate of Operational Management of the General Staff, stated that since the start of the special military operation, the Ukrainian army has lost more than 1.5 million troops, with over 520,000 losses alone in 2025.
