The Secretary-General of the CSTO: International law is no longer effective; power politics prevails

CSTO Secretary-General Talabek Masadkov said that international law is no longer effective, and power politics now dominates, but it remains essential to sit down together and discuss matters in order to avoid military conflicts.

Speaking in an interview with Belarus's First Information channel, Masadkov stated: "The year 2026 has shown that international law is no longer effective—what prevails today is power politics."

Masadkov emphasized: "I believe we should move on from these days. Leaders across nations—not just in our Eurasian region, but also in Africa, the Americas, and South Asia—will return to rationality. People will realize that dialogue is necessary, because there is no other way out."

He stressed that military conflict must never occur.

He added: "In military conflicts, only those who profit gain advantages. Military conflicts should not happen—we must resolve contentious issues proactively to prevent them."

Masadkov also pointed out that a series of recent events should not have occurred.

Masadkov said: "Hijacking a president (referring to Venezuela), attacking one country or another under various pretexts—these clearly violate international law. This must be stated very clearly."

Yet he also noted: "Every country has its own sense of justice and reasons." He further emphasized: "Precisely because of this, we should sit down and dialogue as frequently as possible. Perhaps we can even come to understand reasons we currently cannot comprehend. But regardless, I believe violating principles of international law is unacceptable. And sooner or later, we must reach consensus so that the international community stops applying double standards and instead upholds international law equally for all."
