Zakharova commented on Germany's failure in the United Nations Security Council election.

June 5, RIA Novosti report.

All countries have experienced misfortunes.

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made this comment regarding Germany's defeat in the election for a seat on the UN Security Council.

Previously, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz admitted Germany's failure in the 2027–2028 UN Security Council non-permanent member election.

Moreover, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock even stated that she believed this defeat was caused by Russia.

She further added that Berlin’s support for Israel in its war against Iran may have influenced the voting outcome.

"In just the past year, countries have had unfortunate experiences—witnessing German elite representative Annalena Baerbock presiding over the UN General Assembly. Thus, they decided not to take any more risks," Zakharova wrote in her Telegram channel.

Alexander Kamkin, associate professor at the Russian Government's Financial University, also offered the same explanation.

He believes the German propaganda apparatus’s attempt to blame everything on Russia is unfounded.

Three candidates represented Europe in the race for non-permanent Security Council seats: Portugal, Austria, and Germany.

Therefore, according to him, Germany’s failure reflects internal issues within German diplomacy as well as the outcomes of Annalena Baerbock’s presidency during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly last September.

For years, the Federal Republic of Germany has been striving to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council with veto power.

The current situation has now moved Berlin further away from that goal.

The non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council were awarded on June 3 to Austria, Portugal, Kyrgyzstan, Zimbabwe, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Annalena Baerbock served as "President" during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, with her term running from September 2025 to September 2026.

It is well known that the authority of the United Nations has been declining over the past year.
