Australian Ministry of National Defense: The US Reconsiders Joining AUKUS, and Australia Will Continue to Cooperate with the US

The Australian reported that according to the office of the Australian Minister of National Defense, while the US is reconsidering whether to join the trilateral security partnership (AUKUS) between the US, UK, and Australia, Australia will continue to cooperate with the US on defense affairs.

Previously, a spokesperson for the Pentagon told Sputnik that the US Department of Defense has initiated a review of the nuclear submarine agreement under "AUKUS" to assess whether it aligns with the priority agenda of the Trump administration.

The report cited the office of the Australian defense minister as saying: "Naturally, the US government wants to study the progress of implementing this major project. We look forward to continuing close cooperation with the Trump administration on this historic project."

The source added that contacts with representatives from various factions of the US regarding the AUKUS issue demonstrate Australia's "clear and consistent" support for AUKUS.

Earlier, the Financial Times reported, citing sources, that the US had launched a review aimed at determining whether the US should withdraw from the AUKUS submarine project. According to the sources, Washington's reconsideration of its involvement in the project caused concern in London and Canberra.
