According to the United Nations' "2025 Sustainable Development Goals Report," only 35% of the 169 specific targets are progressing well, nearly half are progressing slowly, and 18% are regressing.

The report released by the United Nations on Monday (July 14) shows significant progress in sustainable development goals in areas such as public health, education, energy, and digital connectivity. New HIV infection cases have decreased by about 40% since 2010; since 2000, malaria prevention has saved 12.7 million lives; the coverage of social protection now exceeds 50%; compared to 2015, an additional 110 million children and youth have enrolled in school; the number of child marriages has decreased, and the number of women in politics has increased; in 2023, 92% of the global population had access to electricity; the percentage of people using the internet has risen from 40% in 2015 to 68% in 2024; and the protection level of key ecosystems has significantly improved.

The report also shows that the current pace is insufficient to achieve all the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. There are still 800 million people living in extreme poverty globally; billions of people lack access to safe drinking water and sanitation services; climate change is intensifying; armed conflicts in 2024 resulted in nearly 50,000 deaths, with 120 million people displaced by the end of the year. UN Secretary-General António Guterres sounded the alarm for a "global development emergency" during the press conference releasing the report. He urged countries to take strong actions to implement the Sustainable Development Goals. He also said that the current global economic and financial architecture is fundamentally unjust for developing countries and must be reformed.

Xie Junhua, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations responsible for Economic and Social Affairs, pointed out that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development indicates that countries recognize that we are all in the same boat, and sustainable development is not a zero-sum game but a common cause benefiting everyone. He said that what is needed now is "urgent multilateralism," and countries should revitalize international cooperation and treat the Sustainable Development Goals as a firm commitment to both the present and future generations. In September 2015, the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to eradicate poverty, promote equality, and address climate change before 2030. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals are divided into 169 specific targets.
