Nissan CEO: "We Must Learn from China!"
On July 22, South Korean media outlet Global Economy published an article stating that Nissan Motor CEO announced the comprehensive adoption of China-style development practices, saying, "China is setting the benchmark for the future of the automotive industry."
Recently, Nissan CEO Iván Espinosa told reporters in an interview: "In areas such as technical capability, cost competitiveness, and development time, China is defining industry standards. We must learn from China and export these valuable experiences to other countries."
After two consecutive years of massive losses, Nissan views speed and innovation from China as a breakthrough, which is expected to impact the entire development convention of traditional automakers.
The core of Nissan's accelerated R&D approach is an integrated process innovation system, which Espinosa calls the "China Strategy."
Traditionally, legacy automakers like Nissan have taken an average of 55 months from planning to mass production for a new vehicle model. Nissan’s management initially aimed to reduce this cycle to 30 months, but actual collaboration with its Chinese partner, Dongfeng Motor, far exceeded this target.
The all-electric Dongfeng Nissan N7, jointly developed by Nissan and Dongfeng, launched in April last year after only 24 months of development. Based on this experience, the next-generation Skyline project is now planned to complete development within 26 months and launch by the end of 2026.
Espinosa confirmed that by the 2026 fiscal year, this process will be applied to 90% of new vehicle projects. Nissan emphasizes that quality will not be compromised during the acceleration of R&D.
