Which Chinese cars are worth Kazakhstanis' attention? The latest survey reveals the answer.

Kazinform News Agency reports that the renowned American research institute J.D. Power recently released a study on automotive quality in the Chinese market, covering electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles, and traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. This survey was based on feedback from new car owners who purchased their vehicles between July 2024 and January 2025, with interviews conducted with more than 20,000 consumers across 48 brands and 122 models.

The best performance came from EVs, with multimedia system issues being the most common complaints.

The study focused on the number of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). Fewer problems indicate greater reliability. The overall market average was 226 problems per 100 vehicles, with the most commonly reported functional issues including navigation systems, Bluetooth connections, touchscreens, and other multimedia systems.

Electric vehicles performed best among the three powertrain categories, with an average of 220 problems per 100 vehicles. Plug-in hybrids had 234 problems per 100 vehicles, while traditional gasoline-powered vehicles had 235 problems per 100 vehicles, showing a clear trend despite the small gap.

BMW i3 has the fewest problems, but it is not a Chinese brand.

Among specific models, the BMW i3, with only 180 problems per 100 vehicles, had the fewest issues. It should be noted that the BMW i3 is part of the German BMW brand and not made in China. However, as it is sold in the Chinese market, it was included in this survey. The model is currently not officially available for sale in Kazakhstan, with only a few private imports available, priced at approximately 16 to 25 million tenge.

Chinese Brand Models: Wuling and BYD Stand Out

Among domestic Chinese brands, the Wuling Hongguang MINI EV ranked second with 192 problems per 100 vehicles. This compact city EV is extremely popular in the Chinese market. In Kazakhstan, only one advertisement for this model has been found, priced at 3.8 million tenge.

In the plug-in hybrid category, the BYD Seal 06 DM-i performed the best, with just 173 problems per 100 vehicles. Although this model has not yet been officially introduced through BYD's Kazakhstan channels, private sellers have already begun selling it in Almaty, with prices around 11 million tenge.

Additionally, BYD also launched an all-electric version of the Seal 06 called the Seal 06 EV. Its price in China is equivalent to the Cobalt on the Kazakhstan market, and it is considered to have significant market potential.

Outstanding Performance of Electric Vehicles, Worth Considering by Kazakhstan Consumers

The survey shows that Chinese electric vehicles outperform hybrid and traditional fuel-powered models in terms of reliability. Given that some models have already entered the Kazakhstan market via private channels, this trend may offer local consumers more options.
