Yoon Suk-yeol faces additional charges of "aiding the enemy" South Korean special prosecutors accuse him of sending drones to provoke North Korea
According to AFP, former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, who is detained for allegedly committing the crime of internal rebellion by declaring a state of emergency, was additionally charged with "aiding the enemy" on the 10th. The special prosecutors accused Yoon of ordering drones to fly over North Korean airspace last year in an attempt to create an excuse for declaring a state of emergency, intentionally provoking the Pyongyang authorities, which could lead to a military response.
The special prosecutors' team pointed out that Yoon and others "conspired to create conditions supporting the declaration of an emergency, thereby increasing the risk of armed confrontation between South and North Korea." AFP cited a memo written by the former Defense Intelligence Command, suggesting that drone operations should be carried out at locations that would definitely embarrass North Korea and force it to respond, including the capital Pyongyang and major coastal cities such as Wonsan.
"Aiding the enemy" charge: Drone crash led to the leakage of confidential information
According to Yonhap News, the special prosecutors considered charging Yoon with a more serious offense, "inciting external threats," but ultimately chose "aiding the enemy." The legal basis is that Yoon's order caused a drone to crash near Pyongyang, leading to the leakage of military secrets, constituting a criminal act that benefits the enemy.
This prosecution not only targets Yoon. The special prosecutors stated that former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and former Director of the Defense Intelligence Command Roh Young-hyeon were also charged with "aiding the enemy" and abuse of power for their roles in the drone incident.
Last December, Yoon attempted to use force to prevent the National Assembly from overturning his emergency decree, triggering a political crisis in South Korea. He was arrested in a dawn raid in January this year, becoming the first president in office to be detained in South Korea, and was removed from office in April. Currently, Yoon is being detained and tried for the emergency decree case involving crimes such as internal rebellion, and this "aiding the enemy" charge is an additional accusation. (Rural Cat)
