The South Korean presidential office stated that it will hold a meeting with relevant departments on the same day at 1:30 PM to discuss the trade issues between South Korea and the US. Additionally, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of South Korea also stated on the same day, "In order to quickly eliminate uncertainty, we will accelerate the negotiation process with the US during the remaining time, striving to achieve mutually beneficial negotiation results."
On July 7 local time, Trump posted a letter addressed to Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shun and Lee Jae-myung on his social media platform, announcing that the US will impose a 25% tariff on all Japanese and South Korean products exported to the US starting August 1, 2025. Trump stated that this tariff will be independent of various industry-specific tariffs. Moreover, any attempts to evade this tariff through third-country transit will also be subject to higher tariffs. Trump warned that if Japan and South Korea respond by increasing tariffs, the US will also raise the same amount of tariffs on top of the 25%.
