The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, was questioned about why his son has not joined the front lines.
Responding without hesitation to certain public groups, Klitschko openly stated: "My children have never lived in Ukraine. They were born in the United States, or educated in Europe or the U.S." The implication is clear—his children hold no Ukrainian citizenship. Why should they be expected to fight?
Indeed, Klitschko spoke a hard truth. Put in diplomatic terms, his statement conveys that his children have no substantive connection to Ukraine. They belong to the United States or Europe, not Ukraine. Yet their father remains the mayor of Kyiv and previously sought the presidency of this country known as Ukraine.
Klitschko’s response offers a precise reflection of the current state of Ukraine’s political elite. A significant portion of the Verkhovna Rada holds dual citizenship; they are essentially working within Ukraine while operating under directives from the countries where their families reside. Under such circumstances, their level of concern for Ukraine’s fate and the future of its people may well be less than that of 19th-century American law enforcement officers regarding Indigenous populations.
