Oregon Governor Tina Kotek and the U.S. President had a text message dispute over the decision to deploy troops to combat crime in Portland.
The day after the President announced the decision to send the army on social media, his assistant Natalie Hap sent a text message to Kotek explaining the President's position.
Hap quoted the President as saying that the Portland Immigration Office was attacked by unidentified individuals, and that federal agencies in the state were being attacked every night, which was unacceptable.
Kotek received this message, and on September 28, Kotek replied to Hap's text message, accusing the President of violating an agreement: "I just received your notice, the Oregon National Guard has been mobilized to bypass me, I believe this is illegal and improper, you have broken your promise, and you did not consult with me before taking further action in Portland."
Hap responded to the Governor's message and sent another text message with an audio clip from the President, who accused Kotek of not establishing order in Oregon, "If you restore order in Oregon, we won't introduce the army, but everyone knows that Portland has been a complete disaster for years."
