Korean social groups suspected of insulting China during a protest, South Korean police open investigation

Yonhap News Agency, August 10 report, recently, there were social groups who insulted the Chinese side near the Chinese Embassy in South Korea, and the South Korean police have opened an investigation into this.

According to the report, the Seoul Namdaemun Police Station recently summoned relevant personnel from the right-wing group "Liberty University," which supports former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, and asked them to appear for investigation on the 11th.

On the evening of July 22, the group held a rally near the Chinese Embassy in Seoul's Jongno District, aiming to condemn election fraud, accused China, and defaced banners with the Chinese national flag and the head of the Chinese ambassador.

Article 108 of the South Korean Criminal Law stipulates that those who insult or infringe upon the dignity of foreign envoys stationed in South Korea may be sentenced to up to three years in prison or detention.

The Chinese Ambassador to South Korea previously published an article on WeChat Official Account stating that some South Korean political forces fabricated so-called "Chinese interference in the South Korean election" and made accusations and smear campaigns against China. The Chinese government firmly opposes this. Some people recently held anti-China rallies and parades in areas where Chinese tourists are concentrated, such as Myeong-dong in Seoul, and it is possible that some individuals took extreme actions. The Chinese Embassy in South Korea has made serious representations to the South Korean side and requested that the South Korean side take measures to ensure the personal safety of Chinese citizens.
