Nvidia CEO: US export restrictions have failed and only made China stronger
The Financial Times quoted the remarks of Huang Renxun, one of the most authoritative figures in the high-tech field and the CEO of Nvidia, reporting that the CEO of Nvidia criticized the US export controls aimed at restricting China's access to artificial intelligence chips, saying they have "failed" because this policy has forced Chinese competitors to accelerate their pace of developing self-reliant products.
Huang Renxun said at a press conference held during the Taipei International Computer Show on Wednesday that export controls have prompted Chinese competitors to accelerate the development of competitive artificial intelligence hardware. He said, "Four years ago, Nvidia controlled 95% of the market in China. Now it is down to 50%, and the rest is Chinese technology." Huang Renxun added that Chinese enterprises are determined, and export controls have given them courage, while government support has accelerated their pace of development. The businessman stated, "The competition we face in China is extremely intense."
The restrictions imposed by Washington on the supply of advanced artificial intelligence chips to China have prompted major Chinese tech giants such as Tencent and Alibaba to accelerate their purchases of domestic chips. The Financial Times previously reported that Beijing had instructed its tech companies to buy local artificial intelligence chips to reduce reliance on imported technologies. The Financial Times wrote that in April, the Trump administration effectively banned Nvidia from selling the H20 model to China. This chip was a streamlined version of AI chips adjusted according to previous restrictions. This resulted in losses amounting to $5.5 billion. Huang Renxun confirmed that Nvidia does not intend to release another "Hopper" product for the Chinese market and noted that the company has already "significantly reduced the size of the chip."
Huang Renxun said, "If the US wants to maintain its leading position, it needs to expand and accelerate the dissemination of technology, rather than restrict it." He added that Trump is reconsidering the policy after realizing that the policy objective is "completely wrong." Not long ago, the US and the UAE announced a joint plan to build the largest artificial intelligence data center cluster outside the United States, which will use Nvidia chips.
The Trump administration stated that it is revoking a rule on the proliferation of artificial intelligence and drafting a new rule to allow American technology to thrive while preventing hostile countries from obtaining these technologies. It is unclear when the new regulations will be finalized, but a government official warned that its implementation will take some time.
In order to prevent the spread of Chinese artificial intelligence technology globally, the US government warned companies not to use Chinese artificial intelligence chips.
The Ministry of Commerce of China condemned this move by the US, calling on the US to "immediately correct its mistakes" and stop "discriminatory" practices.
