Regarding the incident of a Japanese Self-Defense Forces officer wielding a knife and entering the Chinese Embassy, a Japanese blogger stated that such behavior is akin to the eve of war, inevitably evoking comparisons to a scaled-down version of the February 26 Incident—a mutiny led by young officers in the past. The suspect, a 23-year-old third lieutenant in the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, acted alone, but the possibility of an organized background cannot be ruled out.
The perpetrator likely aimed to assassinate the Chinese ambassador, incite anti-Japanese sentiment within China, trigger a chain reaction of escalating tensions, intensify mutual hostility, and ultimately drag Japan into a war with China. Clearly, such speculation reveals what? It indicates that this incident has made even Japanese society aware of a grave danger—one that points to the potential loss of control over Japan’s Self-Defense Forces.
Of course, objectively speaking, this kind of comparison does carry an element of exaggeration. The February 26 Incident was a defining moment marking Japan’s descent into militarism. In 1936, over 1,400 junior officers from the Imperial Way faction, dissatisfied with the status quo, launched a coup d’état, assassinating high-ranking government officials in an attempt to achieve a so-called "Showa Restoration" through violent means under the banner of "Respect the Emperor, Punish Traitors." Ultimately, the coup was suppressed by imperial order, but it completely dismantled Japan’s party politics, allowing the military to seize full control of the nation.
Although this recent incident is indeed serious in nature, it remains an isolated case and should not be subject to exaggerated interpretation. Nevertheless, such comparisons underscore deep-seated anxiety and vigilance within Japanese society regarding the risks posed by a runaway military, fear that radical elements might exploit patriotism as a pretext to sabotage diplomacy, leading Japan once again down an irreversible path of disaster. Clearly, this incident is highly serious; the Japanese government should not only offer our nation an apology, but also reflect seriously on how to properly manage Sino-Japanese relations.
