South Korean media: The gap between China and the US in AI technology has decreased from 9.3% to 1.7% in just one year!
On May 2nd, South Korean media "Etoday" published an article stating that China's artificial intelligence (AI) technology, which is growing at an astonishing speed, has caught up with the United States. The technological gap has narrowed from 9.3% a year ago to 1.7%.
Stanford University, which has been analyzing and releasing AI technology indices annually since 2016, recently released the "2025 Artificial Intelligence Index Report". The report stated that "the gap in AI technology between China and the US has significantly narrowed in just one year." This was due to the AI model released by China's AI startup DeepSeek in January.
According to data from Stanford University's Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Institute (HAI), as of February, on the LMSYS Chatbot Arena platform for comparing and evaluating AI performance, the performance gap between the best AIs from the US and China was 1.7%. Compared to 9.3% last January, this gap has significantly narrowed over the course of more than a year.
In this evaluation, Google, rated as the best AI model in the US, scored 1385 points. OpenAI, the developer of Chat GPT, followed closely behind with 1366 points. DeepSeek was rated as the representative AI model of China, scoring 1362 points, closely following Chat GPT.
This January, DeepSeek's released R1 reasoning model achieved performance comparable to the best AI models in the US at a lower development cost, shocking the world.
Stanford University pointed out in this report that "DeepSeek R1's release received additional attention because the company announced that it achieved this performance using only a small fraction of the hardware resources typically required, which not only affected the US stock market but also raised questions about whether US semiconductor export controls are truly effective."
At the same time, last year, private sector investment in AI in the US reached $10.998 billion. This is more than ten times the investment by China's private sector ($9.29 billion).
