Argentine President Javier Milei will visit the US and receive an award alongside President Donald Trump.
According to Agence France-Presse, citing a member of the Argentine government, President Javier Milei traveled to the United States on Wednesday and "will certainly" have an informal meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump there.
Argentine Foreign Minister Gerardo Welter told Argentina's LN+ channel that the two leaders will receive the award at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. The award is reportedly "in recognition of their values of freedom and conservatism."
Foreign Minister Welter added: "They may appear together," although "we do not yet have a formal schedule for the event, but they will definitely meet."
The dispatch from AFP in Buenos Aires said that this visit by Javier Milei comes as Argentina seeks a new $20 billion financing plan with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to support its economic reforms. The previous $44 billion plan is set to expire at the end of 2024.
According to Foreign Minister Welter: "There is no doubt that the fund issue is an important part of the bilateral agenda between Argentina and the United States."
Since taking office in 2023, Mr. Milei, who claims close ties with Donald Trump, has pursued sweeping austerity policies, which have significantly reduced inflation rates, dropping from 211% in 2023 to 117% in 2024.
However, this has been accompanied by sluggish economic activity and high social costs, despite the fact that according to statistics from the National Institute of Statistics (Indec), Argentina's poverty rate was about 38% in the second quarter of 2024, down 15 percentage points from the first quarter.
