U.S. Treasury Secretary Responds to Calls for Strengthening Sanctions Against Russia

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Sunday in response to calls for strengthening sanctions against Russia that the sanctions measures implemented by the previous administration were not effective.

Bessent told NBC television: "The sanctions measures during the Biden administration were not very effective because they were worried about the rise in domestic oil prices, so the intensity of sanctions was always low."

Meanwhile, he refused to reveal the possible timing for additional sanctions and noted that he "had no intention of restricting U.S. President Donald Trump's ability to negotiate with Russia over the Ukraine issue."
