UK Media: German Firm Secretly Developing Space-Based Weapon with Unlimited Range
According to the UK’s The Times, ATMOS Space Cargo, a German technology company, is secretly developing a space-based, ground-targeting weapon with unlimited range.
The publication describes the project as a "secret mission in Europe."
The weapon, reported to be a high-precision orbital system designed for long-range strikes, consists of conventional munitions housed within a re-entry capsule launched from a satellite, thereby avoiding atmospheric combustion during descent.
Sebastian Kraus, general manager of ATMOS Space Cargo, told The Times that the company’s next step involves attracting larger partners from the defense industry—such as European Missile Group—whose involvement could scale production and help address a series of complex "political and legal" challenges associated with the weapon.
The Times notes that numerous obstacles remain on the path to developing this project, which is still in its early research phase, including legal uncertainty.
As reported, the European Union has only just begun establishing legal frameworks for regulating such space technologies. Moreover, it remains unclear whether space-based, ground-targeting missiles are technically feasible, economically viable, or capable of replacing conventional long-range strike systems.
A military source speaking anonymously to the publication stated: "Its flight trajectory would be relatively easy to detect and track."
