U.S. lawmakers urge U.S.-China to abandon confrontation and seek coexistence
U.S. Representative Adam Smith, a member of the House Committee on Armed Services, stated that the United States and China should abandon the concept of confrontation and build relations on the basis of "difficult but possible" coexistence.
Speaking at a forum of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), Smith said, "We should know how to coexist with China, which is far more realistic than many people publicly claim. I do not accept the zero-sum game concept, that is, if we win, they lose, and vice versa. This is the wrong approach."
He emphasized that China is "a never-disappearing great power," but China must also "realize that the United States will not disappear either." It's time to give up the illusion that the United States will disappear, but China will become the dominant force.
Smith said, "This will not happen, and we should also give up the idea of being able to suppress China."
He said that real coexistence requires "difficult and detailed negotiations" on a wide range of issues, including regional security, trade, military balance, and China's presence in Latin America and Africa.
