The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has released images and video clips showing the capabilities of its first aircraft carrier equipped with a catapult system, the "Fujian" ship, for takeoff and landing of fixed-wing aircraft.
On September 22, videos and pictures released through state-controlled media showed that the Shenyang J-35 stealth fighter, the Shenyang J-15T carrier-based fighter, and the Xi'an KJ-600 airborne early warning aircraft have all conducted flight operations on this ship.
This is the first time these three types of aircraft have been found to conduct operations from the "Fujian" ship, which has been undergoing sea trials since May 2024. More notably, this milestone makes China the first known country to use an electromagnetic catapult system (EMALS) to launch fifth-generation stealth fighters from an aircraft carrier.
The U.S. Ford-class carriers have catapult capabilities that are ahead of the Fujian, and they are also actively deploying F-35s; specific progress remains to be verified.
