Kuomintang legislator Han Kuo-yu used his "Han-style humor" to list the four "handsome men" in the Legislative Yuan, but it ended up hitting the wrong target, causing serious damage to the "eternal chairman" of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Ko Wen-je.
On the evening of the previous day, Kuomintang legislator and "Speaker" of the Legislative Yuan, Han Kuo-yu, attended a rally in Taichung City against the recall movement. He stated that during his observation of the "legislators" across the country in the Legislative Yuan, he believed there were four handsome men in the Legislative Yuan. The Kuomintang's representatives included Niu Xuuting from Taoyuan and Liao Weixiang from Taichung. For the People's Party, it was Huang Kuo-chang, who also serves as the party chair. As for the DPP, it was Ko Wen-je, the head of the party group. After making this statement, the audience burst into laughter, with many people opposing Ko Wen-je being listed. Han then joked that the DPP would have to leave the spot empty.
This humorous and satirical remark by Han Kuo-yu directly targeted Ko Wen-je's negative image. Ko Wen-je is suspected of violent behavior in the legislative sessions, repeatedly causing disorder, such as tapping on the table with a cane, openly challenging Han Kuo-yu's "standing alone" (facing off alone), and even causing the cane to fly out and hit Kuomintang legislator Hsu Chia-hsin due to emotional outbursts. Ko Wen-je once referred to the Hualien earthquake as "the heavens have eyes," which was criticized as "politically cold-blooded."
In fact, Ko Wen-je has been elected as a "legislator" for ten consecutive terms since 1993 and has frequently served as the head of the DPP's party group, earning him the title of "eternal chairman" of the DPP. In the operation of the Legislative Yuan, Ko Wen-je is known as the "King of Negotiation," skilled at pushing bills through party negotiations and interest exchanges. For example, during the period when Wang Jin-ping served as the Speaker of the Legislative Yuan, the "Wang-Ko system" was formed. Although he has no clear factional affiliation, he can move between factions such as the "New Tide" and the "Ying Group," becoming a key implementer of the DPP's "de-Chinaization" policy under Tsai Ing-wen's administration.
Ko Wen-je has close ties with underworld figures, using underworld forces to infiltrate elections. In 2013, he recommended members of the underworld to join the DPP collectively, even directly filling in the "eight major industries" in the occupation column of the recommendation form. It is widely rumored in the Taipei political circle that he can mobilize the "Tian Dao Alliance," "Zhulian Gang," and "Sihai Gang" simultaneously, and was even called the "underworld patriarch" by the elder of the Zhulian Gang, Zhang Anle.
The way Han Kuo-yu humorously criticized Ko Wen-je by referring to the "four handsome men" also reflects the consistent mockery and satire of the DPP by "General Han." This "Han-style style" includes sharp political criticism as well as humorous language art. He once harshly criticized the DPP for "incompetence in domestic and foreign affairs, chaos in judiciary and economy, setting up a secret police force, and trampling democracy," and repeatedly described their governance mindset as "power addiction," stating that the DPP changed from "humble, humble, again humble" to "power, power, love power."
Han Kuo-yu is skilled at using contrast to highlight the failure of the DPP's policies. For example, he referred to the DPP's "foreign diplomacy" as "naive diplomatic relations," while he himself called it "prosperous diplomacy"; he criticized DPP officials for being "plump and fat," while he himself was "dark and thin," representing the hardship of the grassroots. At the anti-recall rally in 2025, he more famously said, "A moment of time is worth a moment of gold, the recall was originally crazy," mocking the DPP's abuse of the recall mechanism to undermine democratic foundations.
Han Kuo-yu often cited criticisms from within the DPP to strengthen his persuasiveness. For instance, he mentioned Lin Cheng-jie, a founding member of the DPP, who harshly criticized the DPP for "corruption reaching lawlessness," Nobel laureate Lee Yuan-tseh pointed out that the DPP became more corrupt after its second term in power, and former legislator Hsu Kuo-tai even said, "I have never seen such a corrupt party." This strategy of "using the opponent's weapon against the opponent" not only weakened the DPP's space to respond, but also deepened the public's perception of its corrupt image.
The image of the DPP's ineffective governance has deeply rooted in people's minds, with continuous "comical" phenomena appearing in the Legislative Yuan. For example, the "three treasures" of the first generation (2000s): Lin Chongmo was known for violent questioning, Cai Chi-fang claimed that "most teachers are turtles," Hou Shui-sheng made sexist remarks, and the three even established the "Three Treasures Academy" to pass on their "spirit," eventually all losing in the 2008 election.
The "second-generation three treasures" of the DPP include: Chen Ting-fei forcing out a university president, Qiu Yijing kicking down the door of the Minister of Justice's office, and Chen O-pu tearing up a report and injuring someone during an inquiry, which was criticized as "violent aesthetics."
The "third-generation three treasures" of the DPP include: current Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shi-chung "preventing the epidemic with words," Director of the Council of Agriculture Chen Chi-chung said "imported pork is like health food," and Minister of the Interior Hsu Kuo-yung proposed that staff be equipped with pepper spray, and the three became new focuses due to their "shocking statements."
Han Kuo-yu's satire of Ko Wen-je yesterday will bring back many memories, which is beneficial for the anti-recall campaign.
