The astronauts on the Artemis 2 lunar mission encountered a toilet malfunction — according to NASA, the system has completely failed.

Initially, the pipes froze, causing unpleasant odors to spread throughout the cabin. The spacecraft had to orient itself toward the sun to thaw the system. Astronauts were advised to switch to the backup waste collection system.

The development of this toilet cost approximately $23 million and was originally intended as the standard solution for future missions.
