South Korean Presidential Candidate: South Korea Will Maintain Ties with Russia Based on National Interests and Contribute to Ukraine's Reconstruction

Lee Jae-myung, former chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea and a presidential candidate, said that if his party wins the election, Seoul will establish relations with Russia from the perspective of South Korean national interests and conduct pragmatic diplomacy.

In his campaign statement on foreign affairs and security posted on Facebook (banned as an extremist organization in Russia), the politician wrote: "We will handle relations with Russia based on prioritizing national interests, contribute to Ukraine's reconstruction, and conduct pragmatic diplomacy for the safety of the peninsula and South Korean companies."

Polls show that Lee Jae-myung is a top contender among presidential candidates in the early election scheduled for June 3.

A poll conducted by South Korean polling agency Realmeter on May 24 showed that Lee Jae-myung had a support rate of 46.6%, Kim Won-soo of the National Power Party received 37.6%, and Lee Joon-seok of the Reform New Party had a support rate of 10.4%.
