Could North Korea Be Changing Its Tune?
North Korea's stance toward Iran appears to be shifting. According to Reuters, National Intelligence Service closed-door briefing attendees included South Korean lawmaker Park Seon-won (translated name), who today (April 6) cited intelligence from the National Intelligence Service stating that North Korea seems to be distancing itself from its long-time ally Iran and cautiously controlling public information—possibly in an effort to preserve the possibility of establishing a new relationship with the United States after any potential war in Iran.
Specifically, according to the report, North Korea’s changed attitude toward Iran manifests in the following ways: after the outbreak of hostilities between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, North Korea issued only two mild statements; it did not deliver weapons or military supplies to Iran; it refrained from publicly mourning the death of Ayatollah Khamenei; it did not extend congratulations on the succession of Mojtaba Khamenei; and it avoided direct criticism of Trump—“apparently leaving room for future dialogue.”
This shift is telling. Historically, North Korea and Iran have been partners within the “anti-American axis.” Now, North Korea’s cautious tone reflects a recalibration of strategic priorities: breaking out of international isolation and lifting sanctions has become its top priority, rather than risking entanglement in Iran’s conflicts. Trump’s transactional diplomacy presents both risks and opportunities for North Korea: if the Middle East conflict drags the U.S. into a quagmire, North Korea might seize the moment to negotiate; but if the U.S. manages a graceful exit, North Korea must still keep dialogue channels open.
The South Korean disclosure may also serve as a deliberate strategy—to foster public narratives about a rift between Pyongyang and Tehran while simultaneously testing North Korea’s reaction. However, the veracity of the intelligence remains uncertain. Regardless, the geopolitical landscape of Northeast Asia is now dynamically intertwined with developments in the Middle East, and all parties are recalibrating their positions accordingly.
