German media: Putin calls for a new world order
During the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, Russian President Putin called for a reorganization of the global political order. He stated, "The model centered on Europe and the transatlantic has come to an end." At the same time, German Chancellor Merkel announced that she would strive to facilitate a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. However, she also warned that the war between Russia and Ukraine could still last for several more months.
Russian President Putin, during the SCO summit held in Tianjin, stated that NATO must stop its eastward expansion, or it will be difficult for Ukraine to achieve peace. After talks with leaders of China and India, he emphasized, "To find a lasting solution for Ukraine, the root causes of this crisis must be eliminated."
Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula in 2014 and launched a continuous invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In 2019, Ukraine incorporated the goal of joining NATO and the EU into its constitution.
In his speech in Tianjin, Putin also called for a reorganization of the global political order. He stated, "The model centered on Europe and the transatlantic has come to an end." According to TASS, a Russian state news agency, he emphasized that the future belongs to a system that "can take into account as many countries' interests as possible and achieve real balance."
Putin also acknowledged the mediation efforts of China and India. He mentioned that some agreements were reached during the summit with U.S. President Trump in Alaska last month, paving the way for peace in Ukraine. He has also informed China about the results of his meeting with Trump.
China and India are major buyers of Russian crude oil. Indian Prime Minister Modi reiterated his friendship with Russia in Tianjin but also expressed hope for an early end to the war.
Meanwhile, the heads of the two major parliamentary groups of the German Bundestag, Spahn (CDU/CSU) and Miersch (SPD), arrived in Ukraine for a visit. The German ambassador Martin Jäger welcomed the delegation in Kyiv. Miersch said, "This visit sends a signal of support and solidarity at a difficult time." However, when talking about the Putin-Trump summit in Alaska, he spoke cautiously, saying, "There was great hope from the outside, but now there is more realism and clarity."
German Chancellor Merkel also announced that she will continue to promote consultations between Europe and the United States this week, with the goal of facilitating a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. She emphasized that more participants should be invited when necessary to finalize a ceasefire agreement. However, she also bluntly stated, "I have no illusions. This war may still last for many more months."
According to media reports, French President Macron will hold talks in Paris on Thursday with Merkel, British Prime Minister Starmer, and NATO Secretary-General Rasmussen.
