On the morning of April 7th, a screenshot of an email showing "Microsoft ceases operations in the China region" began to circulate. The email content stated that due to changes in geopolitical conditions and the international business environment, Microsoft would adjust its global strategic layout and officially cease operations in the China region starting from April 8th, 2025. This decision means that the related work of our Microsoft project team will also be terminated simultaneously. We are fully aware that this change may bring about many uncertainties for everyone, and the company highly values each affected colleague. In order to ensure that everyone's career development is not affected, the company will formulate detailed transition plans, hoping to provide more choices and support for you. At the same time, the company will follow the steps of Microsoft's global layout. We will actively expand overseas businesses in regions such as Vietnam, Japan, Hungary, etc., and prioritize providing overseas job positions and choices for former employees of the original Microsoft business lines.

According to inquiries with internal Microsoft sources by TMT, this email is information from Shanghai MicroPort Company. The "China region operations" mentioned in the text actually refer to Microsoft's outsourcing company "Shanghai MicroPort Software Company," and not Microsoft China. It is understood that Shanghai MicroPort Software Co., Ltd. is a global digital transformation service provider founded in 2002 by Microsoft and the Shanghai municipal government.

Although there has been no change to Microsoft China, some projects related to Microsoft have gradually ceased recently. Previously, it was reported that the Microsoft Zhangjiang Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things Lab, originally scheduled to operate until 2025, had entered a "silent period" ahead of schedule. New project entries stopped at the end of 2024. This lab is one of the seven labs established globally by Microsoft and was officially launched on Zhangjiang Artificial Intelligence Island in May 2019. Initially co-founded by Zhangjiang and Microsoft, when the contract was nearing expiration, Microsoft indicated that it would no longer invest funds. Recently, rumors have circulated that the cooperation between both parties has been terminated and the lab has been closed.
