In a briefing on Friday afternoon, police said a 21-year-old Mohawk College international student was killed in Thursday night's shooting incident in Hamilton. Police described her as an "innocent passerby" who was hit by stray bullets.

Police said the shooting occurred around 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Upper James Street and South Bend Road East.

Detective Acting Sergeant Daryl Reid said during the briefing: "Our current information indicates that there were two vehicles involved in a confrontation at the scene, one being a black Mercedes SUV and the other a white sedan."

"Someone in the Mercedes fired multiple shots," he said. The white sedan then drove north on Upper James Street, while the Mercedes fled west on South Bend Road.

Police also revealed that one of the bullets struck the rear window of a residence on Allenby Avenue, where people were watching TV. Fortunately, no one was injured, but they emphasized that if the bullet had been slightly off course, "the outcome could have been very different."

Police did not specify how many shots were fired but confirmed that one bullet hit a woman waiting at a bus stop across the street.

Police identified the deceased as Harsimrat Randhawa, an international student from India. They said they had contacted her relatives in Toronto.

Hamilton Police Chief Frank Bergen said Friday afternoon: "I extend my deepest condolences to Harsimrat's family. She was young, just starting out in life, but lost it because of some thugs who picked up firearms."

"Remember, Harsimrat's family sent her here for her future, and now there is an empty seat at their dinner table," he said.

Chief Bergen called Randhawa's death a "striking warning of the consequences of gun violence."

"When someone recklessly pulls a trigger without regard, it has a huge impact on the entire community. This behavior is unacceptable," he said. "If you find someone in your home, whether it's a child, sibling, or partner, handling firearms, you have a responsibility to report it. Everyone has a duty to make our city safer."
