The U.S. government shutdown continues, White House officials warn: if talks fail, mass layoffs will begin

Due to the U.S. Senate failing to pass a new temporary funding bill before government funds ran out, the U.S. federal government has been "shut down" since October 1st local time.

The confrontation between the two parties is still ongoing. According to Reuters, on October 5th, Kevin Hassett, the Director of the White House National Economic Council, warned that if President Trump believes negotiations at the congressional level to end the government "shutdown" are "deadlocked," the federal government will start mass layoffs.

Hassett said on CNN's State of the Union program on October 5th that he still believes Democrats may make concessions, thus avoiding an expensive government "shutdown" and the layoffs warned by Russell Walker, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget at the White House.

"President Trump and Russell Walker are preparing all kinds of actions, and they will take immediate action if necessary, but we hope they don't have to do so," Hassett said.

He added, "If the president thinks the negotiations are deadlocked, then layoffs will begin. But I think everyone still has hope, and once the new week begins, we can make the Democrats understand that avoiding such layoffs is just common sense."
