Foreign Media: Former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi Urges China and Japan to Unite Against 'American Arrogance'
Former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi (served 2009–2010) delivered a speech at an event hosted by the newly established Academy of Governance and Policy at the University of Hong Kong, calling on China and Japan to cooperate jointly in countering the unilateralism under Donald Trump’s leadership, aiming to prevent the collapse of the international order.
He stated that China and Japan should seek common ground, manage their bilateral relations properly, and expand alliances with like-minded countries to strengthen collective bargaining power. Koizumi criticized the current Japanese Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba, for prioritizing appeasing Trump, arguing this approach aims to ensure "Japan does not become a victim of American bullying"—yet he bluntly asserted that such a strategy is unsustainable and cannot be maintained long-term.
Koizumi’s remarks come amid accelerating global reordering driven by Trump’s policies. He advocates that Japan and China should no longer act independently within the U.S.-dominated framework, but instead integrate their strength on a multilateral level to confront what he describes as "America’s selfish behavior."
