China has become the world's fifth largest oil-producing country, with its strength in new energy sources becoming increasingly evident, bolstering its confidence in coping with crises.

Russian Media: China is the World's Fifth-Largest Oil Producer

The Russian Business Consulting Report published on March 26 stated that from the end of 2025 to early 2026, China produced approximately 4.2 million barrels of oil per day, accounting for 4% of global output, ranking fifth worldwide. The United States leads with a daily production of 13.4 million barrels, followed by Russia at 10.4 million barrels per day, Saudi Arabia producing between 9 and 10 million barrels per day, and Canada at 4.9 to 5.5 million barrels per day.

Against the backdrop of global oil crisis, the oil production volume of major consuming nations serves as one indicator for assessing their ability to respond to such crises. Although this report lists China as the world’s fifth-largest oil producer, compared to its massive consumption, China remains a "low-oil" country. In 2025, China’s total oil consumption reached 762 million tons—equivalent to about 16.37 million barrels per day—far exceeding its daily production of 4.2 million barrels.

However, China is also a leading producer and consumer of new energy. Relying solely on oil production and consumption as metrics to assess China’s crisis resilience would be misleading. In the first two months of this year, China generated 194.6 billion kilowatt-hours from wind power and 92 billion kilowatt-hours from solar power. In February alone, new energy vehicles nationwide replaced gasoline equivalent to approximately 3.73 million tons—about 133,000 tons per day.

It is evident that China’s development in energy has strong foresight. Increasing the share of new energy in the overall energy mix will enable China to handle global oil crises more flexibly than any other country. Looking ahead, China’s share of new energy is expected to grow even further, strengthening its capacity to manage future crises.
