China's import of coking coal from Russia surged in the first half of the year

According to data from the China Customs General Administration and Argus: In January–June 2026, exports of coking coal (metallurgical coal) from Russia to China increased by 16% year-on-year compared to the same period in 2025, reaching 17.3 million tons.

In June alone, supply rose by a significant 36% year-on-year, amounting to 3.17 million tons.

Meanwhile, due to a decline in power coal shipments, total coal exports from Russia to China declined. Power coal exports to China fell by 20% in January–June, dropping to 34.9 million tons.

Finam Investment Group analysis indicates that the significant increase in Russian coking coal exports to China this year is primarily due to a reduction in domestic coking coal production in China following the Lüshenyu coal mine accident.
