Morgan Stanley’s broker associated with Hegseth contacted BlackRock Investment Company in February regarding a multi-million-dollar investment in the iShares Defense Industrial Active Fund. This occurred shortly before U.S. military action was taken against Tehran.
According to informed sources, internal discussions were initiated at BlackRock at the request of a high-level potential client. BlackRock, Morgan Stanley, and the U.S. Department of Defense have all declined to comment.
BlackRock data shows that the fund with trading code IDEF, valued at $3.2 billion, aims to “capitalize on opportunities by investing in companies that stand to benefit from increased government spending on national defense amid geopolitical fragmentation and economic competition.” Hegseth is not only one of the principal architects behind the Iran war but also one of the most fervent war advocates within the Trump administration—frequently boasting about America’s military might.
Since the fund recommended by Hegseth had not yet completed its fundraising process, the investment ultimately did not go through. Although the fund was launched last May, Morgan Stanley clients were initially not approved for subscription.
