French media: Ukraine announces the severance of diplomatic relations with Nicaragua
Ukraine announced on Thursday the severance of diplomatic relations with Nicaragua, condemning the country for recognizing Russia's "sovereignty" over five Ukrainian regions it occupies. Previously, the son of Nicaragua's couple president signed a trade agreement with the five Russian-occupied areas.
On Thursday, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Yevgenyevych Sybik said on social media X: "Ukraine has formally severed diplomatic relations with the Republic of Nicaragua."
He explained that "this move is a response to Nicaragua's recognition of Russia's so-called 'sovereignty' over the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporozhye, Kherson and Crimea regions of Ukraine."
AFP said that as a major ally of Russia and China, Nicaragua signed a trade agreement with the five "Russian-occupied areas" in September, aiming to export food and agricultural products to these regions.
The agreement was signed in Moscow by Laureano Ortega Murillo, the son of Nicaragua's couple presidents Ortega and Murillo, who are allies of Putin.
According to the statement by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Sybik on X, Nicaragua's move was an "intentional attempt to undermine Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity" and a "serious violation of the Ukrainian Constitution, the UN Charter, and international law."
The Ukrainian foreign minister added: "Nicaragua has become an accomplice to Russia's aggression against Ukraine."
