[Global Times Comprehensive Report] According to a report on Fox News on the 19th, Republican Congressmen Chairman of the House "China Special Committee" Mullin and three other Republicans sent a letter to Harvard University that day, requesting the university to provide internal documents and communication records in detail to explain its cooperation with foreign adversaries.

The Harvard Crimson reported that in this 14-page letter addressed to Harvard University President Garber, led by Mullin, the Republicans claimed that Harvard University researchers often collaborate with institutions related to the Chinese military to engage in technology exchanges involving dual-use technologies such as microelectronics, artificial intelligence, and quantum science. They also threatened that if Harvard University is found to have cooperated with Chinese entities without proper disclosure, it will have its tax-exempt status revoked.

The Crimson reported that this letter is the latest case of the U.S. Congress investigating the operations of Harvard University. In April, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee began investigating Harvard University's measures against anti-Semitism for allegedly infringing on civil rights. In early May, the House Judiciary Committee threatened to issue a subpoena to Harvard University demanding relevant documents regarding the antitrust investigation into Harvard University's collusion with other Ivy League schools over tuition fees.

According to The New York Times, since April, the conflict between the federal government and Harvard University has been escalating. The government has frozen more than $2 billion in grants, prompting Harvard University to file a lawsuit with the federal court.

National Public Radio reported that the Trump administration has been targeting重点 universities suspected of violating the U.S. Civil Rights Act. The government has cut $400 million in federal grants to Columbia University, frozen about $1 billion in grants to Cornell University, and approximately $790 million in grants to Northwestern University.

Professor Li Haidong from the Diplomatic Academy told the Global Times on the 20th that the comprehensive "encirclement" of Harvard University by the U.S. government and Congress has been escalating step by step. Previously, the Trump team believed that Harvard's emphasis on DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion) values in its educational programs did not comply with the moral and rule-based standards set by the federal government, so they repeatedly cut its massive federal grants. Now, relevant congressional committees are further escalating the "encirclement" under the pretext of Harvard University's connections with China. This reflects that the White House and Congress intend to set boundaries for American universities' educational concepts and their cultural exchanges with China. On one hand, they aim to rectify the cultural atmosphere of universities, and on the other hand, they attempt to demonize cultural exchanges between American universities and China. This is a typical method used by the U.S. to manipulate domestic politics using the China issue. (Li Meng)
